… As you can see from the photo, I started playing Guitar at an early age. At the time it was my true friend and true love. This photo taken by my Father outside our house in Churchfield, Cork City in 1975, shows me mastering the mighty A Chord on my brother John’s 12 string acoustic no less! ha!…
Two or three more chords and I’d be spending my days learning songs from the wide range of Vinyl Albums we had in the house, owned by my siblings.
One of the first places I ever played in public was Delacy House in Cork City. That club hosted some of the top national and international acts of the time and I was lucky enough to get support slots now and again. This was the beginning of my development as a solo entertainer. Watching and listening to so many and varied artists, I soaked it up like a sponge. It was around this time too that I started finding my own influences. Freddie White, Jimmy MacCarthy, Galleon, Finnegans Wake…the list goes on. There was a lot of learning to be had!!
These days (Many years & chords later) I feel I have developed a style of solo performance which really reflects the variety of influences I have had over the years.
Although I mainly play my own arrangement of classic cover songs, I also love when I can throw some of my own songs in to the mix. Writing for me has always been a kind of therapy but when my songs are appreciated by the public at large, it gives me a sense of worth and pride.
My song “Take This Man” has proven to be a favorite for many since I wrote it almost 16 years ago. It’s an absolute dream to hear people sing it with me.
